In addition to the HIV/AIDS crisis, radiation from the 1986 Chornobyl disaster has caused other health issues in Ukraine. The explosion at Chornobyl released approximately 200 times more radiation than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. Cancer rates among children in regions affected by radiation have risen steadily over the years. Also, multiple studies have shown that since the Chornobyl disaster, birth defects due to chromosome damage have doubled. Twenty years recently passed since the Chornobyl disaster and Ukraine will face its legacy for many years to come.
