A

dramatically worsening in the last years: there is a shortage of food, medicine,
and bandages. By November 2005, there was a 4 months delay in the nurses’
salary and many of them have since stopped helping patients.

colony had its own place for burials, once it was not allowed to bury Leprosy
patients in metropolitan cemeteries. The old Paricatuba Leprosarium was closed
in 1968, but many of its former patients are still living around.
