
After nearly three sleepless nights waiting for the Arriaga train, immigrants fall asleep on the tracks in the Ixtapec railyard as they wait for the next freight train to Medias Aguas, Veracruz. After Hurricane Stan, the southernmost point in Mexico to catch a freight train headed north is Arriaga, Chiapas. The route runs north to Ixtapec, Oaxaca, passing through a relatively treacherous stretch of rail in an area called La Ventosa (Windy) where seasonal coastal winds draw westward from the mountains to the sea with enough force to overturn semi trailers, high tension electricity towers, and freight trains.
