Bottom left: A sheep pen, part of the Bedouin tribe of Jahaleen encampment,
close to the main road between Jerusalem and the Dead Sea. The tribe was moved
in the early '50s from their lands in the Tel-Arad region in the southern
Negev desert to reside at the outskirts of the Judea Desert, then under Jordanian
rule, until 1967 when it came under Israeli rule.
Below : Jamal Abu-Ajaj, a Bedouin who has served as a tracker in the Israeli
army for 20 years, visits his family one weekend in Abu-Ajaj. The recruitment
percentage among Bedouin youngsters has dropped considerably over the last
few years due to the land disputes between the Bedouins and the state authorities.
