Plants and other aromatic products are burned in a brazier whilst the gathered attempt to identify the spirit. The woman, her head covered by a veil and in the middle of the room, presents her face and different parts of her body to the smoke. The drummers change their rhythms and chanting until they find the one to suit the possessing spirit. Once the spirit is identified, the dancer will enter a trance and offerings of sweets are made. Then a small animal, such as a cock or a ram, or sometimes even a young camel, is slaughtered, and the dancer will cover herself with some of the sacrificial blood before resuming her dance. This stage can last up to several days.
