Approximately 24.000 children, as young as 8 years old have been stolen from their families and indoctrinated into the LRA. The children are treated terribly, if anyone tries to run away or is too weak, their own comrades are forced to put them to death. If any child refuses to carry out the killing, they themselves are under threat of death. These portraits were taken in the rehabilitation centre Gusco (supported by Save the Children) where the children or young adults are brought if they manage to run away or are injured or captured in battle.
Thomas, 15. Spent 3 months with the LRA. ‘One night we had just gone to sleep - I recognised the area we were in, I knew we were close to my village – and then it started raining. Usually when it rains we would move because the rain would erase the traces, but the officers decided we should stay. The officers had a tent, but us children would sleep outside, but that night they forgot to tie me up. As quietly as I could I got up in the rain and started running’ Thomas was one of the lucky ones to escape.
