A Tamil officer hauls down the Tamil flag during the ceremony to remember Colonel Kittu, an important Tamil Tiger leader who committed suicide. Tamil Tigers would rather commit suicide than be captured and imprisoned by their enemies. He died in January 1993 and was immediately made a martyr by the LTTE – Every year the Tigers commemorate his death.

They say that Sri Lanka is the cry of India. For more than 30 years there has been a civil war between the Sri Lankan government and the Tamil Tiger separatist rebels (LTTE). The tensions between the Sinhalese and the Tamils are as old as the history of the island itself and are continuing until today.
