Mustafa Davies, 32, Accountant.

I converted 9 and a half years ago, after backpacking and teaching English in Indonesia and Malaysia. I saw that the Muslims there had a peace about them, it was being with them that brought me to Islam. When I got back to London I went to the Central Mosque to take my Shahada, the declaration of faith. I had never been a big drinker, but I used to sit in the pub and realise how superficial, lonely and insular people in London are. I couldn’t get over the lack of family security either; getting married knowing you might divorce. I wanted a belief system to guide me. What’s the point of living if there’s no life after? Even reaching the top as consumers and procreators people kill themselves, like Elvis and Marilyn.
