The chemical site called Arkema based in
Marseille uses dangereous substances. The rejections of chlorine or of ammoniac
on the surounding borrows can often be smelled.
Thirty years after the Seveso incident in Italy and four years
after the A.Z.F. factory explosion, 1.105 areas in France have been placed
under the jurisdiction of the Seveso II directive. Of these, 633
offer a high tolerance level of pollution, while 472 a low tolerance level.
There are an estimated 500,000 people living in separate alert zones.
