In February 2001 there was a bomb attack on the Kfor escorted Nis express bus service between Serbia proper and Gracanica, 11 people died. No one has been convicted, and in March 2001 the main suspect escaped from an American army prison. This has further strengthened Serb feelings of insecurity and isolation. Kosovo is the cradle of the Serbian orthodox church with hundreds of holy sites throughout the province. The monks and nuns have stayed on in their monasteries, and today have 24 hour Kfor protection. While Kfor has protected the major monasteries and churches, nearly one hundred smaller ones have been desecrated or destroyed.

The train travels through the whole of Kosovo twice a day connecting the southern enclaves with the Serb dominated Northern Kosovo and Serbia itself.
