After a quarter of a century of war many people feel the need for rehabilitation in many aspects of their lives whether it is mental, physical or social. Christian groups and churches are particularly active in providing re-training programmes for women and young people. The Don Bosco catholic school in Dili offers occupational training to ex-guerrilla soldiers and teachers in subjects such as carpentry, construction and electronics. Many of the ex-guerrillas at the Don Bosco school are in their early thirties, having been in the mountains as guerrilla fighters for many years. The school mixes the ex-guerrillas in with ordinary students to encourage them to gently move back into a normal life routine. Some NGOs are helping women who lost their husbands during the war to be financially independent by teaching them sewing and craft making skills.
