Doctors help a baby to breathe and prepare to insert a feeding tube into the baby's arm.

Odense University Hospital, in the city of Odense, has one of the largest departments for prematurely born babies in Denmark. It is a place where life and death are continually present. About 10 % of all births in Denmark are premature deliveries. The babies lie in an incubator for most of the day, but sometimes, if their condition is stable enough, they can be held by their parents. Often the children and their parents have to spend several months at the hospital until the children are strong enough to go home. These photographs document this universe of hope and faith, at the hospital where mothers give birth to children who have to struggle their way into life.
